ในอดีต   ชาวยุโรปเชื่อว่าการจามเป็นอาการอย่างหนึ่งของโรคระบาดและเชื่อกันว่าโป๊ปเกรเกอรี่ที่ 1 (ค.ศ.590-604) แนะนำให้สวดมนต์สั้นๆด้วยการกล่าวว่า “God bless you” (พระเจ้าอวยพรท่าน) หลังจากจามเพื่อคุ้มครองผู้จามจากความตาย

นอกจากนี้แล้ว  หลังดื่มน้ำหรือกินข้าว มุสลิมจะกล่าว “อัลฮัมดุลิลลาฮฺ” เพื่อเป็นการขอบคุณพระเจ้าผู้ให้ข้าวให้น้ำและให้ปากเคี้ยวข้าวได้

นบีมุฮัมมัดเคยกล่าวว่า “เรื่องของผู้ศรัทธานี่ช่างน่าทึ่งเสียนี่กระไร เพราะในทุกสิ่งมีความดีสำหรับเขาและสิ่งนี้มีแต่เฉพาะกับผู้ศรัทธาเท่านั้น กล่าวคือ  ถ้าเขาได้รับสิ่งดี  เขาก็แสดงความขอบคุณพระเจ้า  นั่นเป็นการดีสำหรับเขา และถ้าเขาได้รับสิ่งไม่ดี  เขาก็อดทน และนั่นก็เป็นสิ่งดีสำหรับเขา”

It is also said that our heart stops when we sneeze and saying “God bless you” is a way of welcoming the sneezer back from the dead.

When the Prophet Muhammad (Praise be to God) taught Muslims to say after a sneeze, “Alhamdulillah” (Praise be to God). This is a way of thanking God for having installed a system to expel foreign objects that enter the human nose. When someone hears the sneezer say this, the person should reply, “Yarhamukallah” (God has mercy on you).

In addition, after drinking water or eating, Muslims say “Alhamdulillah” to thank God for giving them food, water and the mouth to chew.

The phrase “Alhamdulillah” is part of the supplication that Muslims recite during prayer and repeat it 33 times after the prayer to instill the belief that only God deserves to be praised and thanked. Therefore, when someone praises or compliments them, Muslims say: “Alhamdulillah” to deflect praise to God and to prevent egotism.

When greeted and asked about their well-being, the person being questioned will say “Alhamdulillah” even when they are sick or suffering, because they consider illness and suffering to be a part of life that God has given them. If they were not alive, they would not be sick or suffering.

The Prophet Muhammad once said, “How amazing is the case of the believer, because in everything there is good for him, and this is only for the believer. That is, if he receives something good, he expresses gratitude to God, that is good for him. And if he receives something bad, he endures it, and that is good for him.”
