This teaching means that the hundreds of idols surrounding the Ka'bah are not worthy of worship apart from Allah alone.

The reason why this teaching was offensive to Mecca's leaders was because they viewed it as destroying the cultural beliefs that people had held and practiced for thousands of years. Meccan leaders looked further that if people did not pay homage to the idols that lined the Ka'bah, No one will come to Makkah. As a result, Mecca would lose its importance as a religious center and the Meccans would lose the commercial benefits of not having caravans there. The sorcerers, on the other hand, knew that they would lose the benefit of offering idolatry to the Arabs who came to worship sacred idols.

But more importantly is the announcement that “Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” means that if one turns to faith in Allah as the only true God, then That person is a Muslim who must obey the prophet Muhammad who was appointed by God. In the eyes of the rulers, it was immediately apparent that this was a transition of leadership to Muhammad and to the new culture he would bring. This is the reason why Meccan leaders began to oppose the Prophet Muhammad from the beginning of his mission to spread Islam.
