Thais, regardless of breed or price, feel angry when they're called "dogs." But when we use the word "dog" to insult foreigners, foreigners don't get it, and so they don't get angry. Foreigners consider dogs to be friendly, grateful animals. But why do some Thais call ungrateful people worse than dogs? Even dogs appreciate the kindness of their caregivers. But if they call foreigners "pigs," foreigners get angry, because pigs are dirty and inferior to dogs.
People who are called "dogs" feel angry because they've been discredited as quadrupeds. But it's strange how Thailand treats dogs better than the poor, enacting laws that punish dog abusers more severely than wife abusers. I'm puzzled, because from what I know, lawmakers tend to protect their own interests. Don't take this as a joke. I'm serious, because Thais are confused about dogs.
When I was a primary school student, I'd pass a wealthy home. A sign at the gate read, "Beware of Fierce Dog." Every time I passed, the house's dog would bark at me. I'd come back and tell my father about it. He'd say, "Dogs bark but don't bite," because they were "dogs barking at dry banana leaves." As I grew older, I realized why Thais often use these two dog behaviors to describe people who talk but don't act.
Another dog behavior my father told me about when he was accused of being a follower of a particular ideology was, "One barks at the shadow, a hundred bark at the sound."
