Why Do We Fast During Ramadan?

Banjong Bingkasan

The Quran contains the divine words: “Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed as guidance, along with evidence and judgments that clearly distinguish right from wrong…” (Quran 2:185)
These words demonstrate God’s mercy as the Creator of all things. Having created them, He has ordained and guided everything according to His plan. Billions of stars in the vast universe are ordained and guided by their orbits. When they are on the right path, billions of stars exist peacefully, without chaos or confusion.
The Earth is one such planet inhabited by humans and other living beings. All living things, including humans, are subject to the biological laws established by God. Each animal species receives guidance in its life, and therefore, the way of life of each species differs.
But for humans, although superior to animals, they are weaker at birth. Without guidance in life, humans will go astray, live poorly, and suffer ruin, not only for themselves but also causing harm to others.
The above explains why God has given humanity guidance in life and criteria for judgment that distinguish good from evil, for them to use in their lives. This guidance is the Quran, which was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad in the month of Ramadan and took 23 years to complete in its final form.
In fact, Prophet Muhammad also told us that before him, God had given guidance in the form of scriptures to various nations, such as the Torah to Moses, the Tabur to David, and the Gospel to Jesus. But when these scriptures were damaged by decay or altered, God gave the final guidance to Prophet Muhammad in the form of the Quran to confirm God's correct guidance.
Prophet Muhammad also told us that all these scriptures were revealed in the month of Ramadan at different times, but with the same purpose.
The scriptures revealed by God are intended to be guidance in life and to be social rules or laws, not merely for reading and praying. But if these rules and laws are not obeyed, humanity will not benefit. Therefore, to make humanity obedient, God revealed these scriptures. Fasting was prescribed to train believers to fear God. This is the purpose of fasting in the month of Ramadan.
Outwardly, fasting involves abstaining from eating, drinking, consuming substances, and sexual relations to remind those fasting to refrain from speaking nonsense or gossiping about others. Inwardly, it aims to control negative emotions such as anger or jealousy.
If, despite fasting, one cannot control inner negativity or refrain from nonsense, rudeness, or anger, the fast is merely a futile act of hunger and deprivation.
Islam wants those fasting to learn an important lesson: if one can abstain from necessities like food and water, why can't one abstain from unnecessary things like vices and evil deeds in accordance with God's guidance?
