Both Animals and Humans Fast for Survival

Banjong Bingkasan

Both humans and animals eat to survive, but at certain times, fasting is also a way to survive.
Fasting at certain times can be beneficial to humans. Although not a religious practice, fasting has been used for purposes such as surgery, political protests, or struggles.
The practice of fasting is not limited to humans.
From biological studies of animals, scientists have found that even animals have periods of fasting. During the summer, when ponds and streams dry up for two to three months, some frogs and fish bury themselves under the dry soil, remaining motionless to conserve energy for survival. If they did not do so, they and their species could not survive.
Parent salmon, native to the headwaters of North America, take turns caring for the eggs they lay. When their offspring hatch and are strong enough, they die of fasting while caring for their young, in order to ensure the continuation of the species.
When the parent fish die, the school of salmon swims out into the streams and rivers and into the sea to forage for three or four years. Once they have accumulated enough food, they return to the sea. It is determined that the salmon will swim back to the river from which they came and then swim to the stream to reach the headwaters, their birthplace. Along the way from the river mouth to their birthplace, the salmon will not eat any food.
Upon reaching the headwaters, the female salmon will lay eggs, and the male will fertilize them. After that, the parents will guard and protect the eggs until they hatch. The parent salmon will die from starvation. Their death from starvation ensures the survival of their species.
A hen, after laying eggs, will spend several days incubating them without foraging, because she knows her chicks inside the egg need warmth to hatch. The hen spends many days incubating the eggs. If she gets hungry, she will quickly go out to forage for energy and then rush back to continue incubating the eggs. If she doesn't do this, her eggs will not hatch.
Many other animals, such as insects and penguins, also exhibit fasting behavior for the survival of their species.
Fasting also exists in humans, but human fasting has different purposes, such as fasting to maintain health and figure, or fasting as a vow for something, with the reward depending on the intention of the fast.
As for fasting in Islam... Muslims have no other intention than to obey God's command in order to attain the highest virtue, which is piety or, in Arabic, "taqwa." The benefits that arise from fasting are merely secondary benefits.
Importantly, fasting is a practice to ensure the soul's peaceful survival in the hereafter. If one fasts wisely, they will learn that if they can abstain from necessities like food and water, why not abstain from non-essential things like vices? The peaceful survival of the soul therefore lies in abstaining from what God has forbidden in this world.
Prophet Muhammad said, "There are two times when the fasting person is happy: the first time is when he breaks his fast after abstaining all day, and the second time is when he meets God."
