Zakat existed before the time of Prophet Muhammad.

Banjong Bin Kasun

If we study the history of the prophets whom Allah appointed to guide humanity in life, we will find that the religious practices prescribed for Muslims began during the time of Prophet Ibrahim and his descendants.
After building the Kaaba according to Allah's command, He taught Prophet Ibrahim the methods of prayer (Salat) and Hajj. Not only that, Allah also commanded Prophet Ibrahim to invite people to worship Him at the Kaaba.
After Prophet Ibrahim passed away, Ismail, his first son from Hajar, his second wife, not only commanded his people (the Arabs) to pray, but also to pay Zakat.
"And it is mentioned in the Book about Ismail, that he was a man of integrity, a Messenger, a Prophet." He commanded his people to perform the prayer and pay the zakat.” (Quran 19:54-55)
This verse shows us that the payment of zakat began during the time of Prophet Ismail. But after Prophet Ismail's death, his Arab descendants forgot and abandoned the prayer and zakat that Allah had prescribed.
Prophet Ibrahim had a second son, Isaac, with his first wife, Sarah. Isaac gave birth to Yaqub, a grandson of Prophet Ibrahim. Yaqub is considered a prophet in Islam and is given the title “Isra’il.” The descendants of Prophet Yaqub are therefore referred to in the Quran as “Bani Israel.”
And it is also in the Quran that we read that Allah said to the Bani Israel, “I will be with you.” "If you establish prayer and pay zakat and believe in my Messenger." (Quran 5:12)
Among the Children of Israel, some were honored by Allah to be prophets and received scriptures from Him. For example, Moses received the Torah, David received the Tabur, and Prophet Isa received the Gospel. For this reason, the Quran sometimes refers to the Children of Israel as "People of the Book" (Ahl al-Kitab).
All prophets affirmed faith in one God, prayer, and zakat, but the Children of Israel abandoned God's commandments. Prophet Isa (Jesus) was therefore sent to affirm the original commandments.
570 years after the time of Prophet Isa, Allah revealed the Quran as the final scripture to Prophet Muhammad. In the Quran, we read that Prophet Isa said: “And He has commanded me concerning prayer and zakat as long as I live.” (Quran 19:31)
This shows that prayer and zakat are commandments from God. However, since the pre-Islamic scriptures were not in Arabic, zakat is called “tithe” in Thai, meaning one-tenth. We find the following practices or requirements regarding tithes in the Bible:
“All the tithes of the earth, whether seeds or fruit from trees, belong to God.” (Leviticus 27:30)
“For the annual harvest of the produce of your fields, you shall give as a tithe.” (Deuteronomy 14:22)
“I gave the Levites the tithes of Israel as an inheritance, as compensation for the work they did.” This is the work performed at the Tent of Meeting” (Numbers 18:21).
The method of paying the “tizan” (or zakat of the Children of Israel) is as follows:
- 1/10 of agricultural and livestock produce (Leviticus 27:30-32)
- Those twenty years and older, rich or poor, must pay half a shekel every three years (Exodus 30:13-15)
- The collector is the treasury of the Temple in Jerusalem.
- Half of the tizan collected is allocated to religious officials.
- 1/10 of the remainder is given to the Levites (descendants of Prophet Harun).
- 1/10 is for the care of pilgrims to Jerusalem.
- The remainder is used to care for widows, orphans, and the poor.
Because the pre-Islamic scriptures were interfered with or altered by human hands, Allah eventually sent Prophet Muhammad to reform them in order to bring justice and full benefit to the development of society until the end of the world.
