The Sun Determines the Day, the Moon Determines the Month

Banjong Binkasan

“On the Day that God created the heavens and the earth, He ordained that there would be twelve months, four of which were sacred. This is the true religion. So do not sin against yourselves by transgressing against these months.” (Quran 9:36)
It is amazing that when Allah created the universe and the world we live in, He also told us that there are twelve months in this world. And in order for humans to count the days and months as Allah prescribed, since the time when there were no clocks, He created the sun to indicate the day and the moon to indicate the month.
Day and night have their boundaries. Daytime begins from sunrise until sunset. After that, nighttime begins. The sun only indicates the day; it cannot indicate the month because it is a full sun in the sky all day. The moon, however, indicates the month because it is full only once a month. After that, it gradually shrinks and disappears, reappearing as a crescent to indicate the start of a new month.
Because the universe was once very dark, the start of a new day for the Arabs begins at sunset, while for Westerners, it begins after midnight. When Islam appeared in the Arabian Peninsula in 610 CE, religious commandments were revealed for believers to perform at specific times, as there were no clocks. Therefore, they relied on solar phenomena to determine the timing. For example, Fajr prayer must be performed before sunrise, Maghrib prayer begins at sunset and continues until the red light disappears from the sky, and afternoon prayer begins when the sun is slightly overhead and continues until the shadow of an object is equal in length to the object itself.
This is a convenience provided by God for the faithful in performing their religious duties. Regardless of location, the sun and moon in their area can be used to determine the time. For instance, when the sun sets in the west of Thailand, Thai Muslims can perform Maghrib prayer immediately, without having to wait for sunset in Myanmar or Bangladesh.
Similarly, fasting during Ramadan (the ninth month of the Islamic calendar) relies on the appearance of the first crescent moon of Ramadan, a practice that has been observed since the time of Prophet Muhammad. Most months in the lunar calendar have 29 days. There may be one or two months in a year that have 30 days.
At that time, the first Muslim Arabs lived in the vast, endless desert with clear skies where the crescent moon was clearly visible. On the 29th day of Sha'ban (the 8th month), when the sun had set and daylight hours were over, whoever saw the first crescent moon of Ramadan would inform others and begin fasting together the next day. If no one saw the crescent moon, it meant it was still Sha'ban, and everyone would go back to sleep to prepare for fasting the next day. No one waited to hear news of anyone sighting the crescent moon from Africa.
This is a practice (Sunnah) that has been in place from the time of Prophet Muhammad to the present day.
