Natural Hajj Timeline

Banjong Bingkasan

I went on Hajj in 1995. After completing the standing point (Wuquf) at Arafah on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, which is a crucial point of the Hajj, early the next morning I was at Mina. After breakfast, I knew that the 10th was Eid al-Adha. I wanted to see the atmosphere of the Eid prayer there, so I took a car to Mecca. But when I arrived, I found that there were very few people at the Kaaba courtyard. I learned from the locals that the people of Mecca perform the Eid prayer immediately after the sun rises. After the prayer, they go out to celebrate Eid outside the city.
That day made me realize that Muslims around the world who go on Hajj do not have to perform the Eid prayer, and that people in Mecca who do not perform the Eid prayer are also going on Hajj.
Upon returning to Thailand... I already knew that the Hajj pilgrimage originated during the time of Prophet Abraham, the ancestor of faith for the descendants of Israel (Jews and Christians) and the descendants of Ishmael (Arabs). However, later, the descendants of Abraham forgot the form of the Hajj that Abraham taught. Nevertheless, we can find traces from the Bible that during the time of Prophet David, king of the Kingdom of Israel, people traveled on pilgrimage to a place called "Baka" (or Bakkah), the name of the valley where Abraham was commanded by God to build the "Kaaba" as a place for worshipping Him alone.
We do not know how the people in the time of Prophet David, the descendants of Israel, performed the Hajj, but among the Arabs, the descendants of Ishmael, the Hajj deviated from its original form to the point that various Arab tribes brought 360 strange-looking idols and arranged them around the Kaaba, worshipping these idols instead of Allah, the owner of the Kaaba.
The most important ritual of the Hajj is the circumambulation of the Kaaba. However, some pre-Islamic Arab tribes walked around naked, while others whistled. After circumambulating the Kaaba, they would slaughter animals and splash the blood onto the Kaaba walls as a form of worship of the idols they revered. The meat of the animals would be piled up or skewered on wooden poles for the poor to take and eat. The wealthy, therefore, often displayed their wealth by slaughtering many animals.
The pre-Islamic Hajj took place between the 8th and 12th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the lunar calendar traditionally used by the Arabs. During this time, various Arab tribes brought goods to Mecca. Thus, the Hajj was a major trade event for the Arabs. For this reason, the Arabs had a tradition of prohibiting fighting and killing one month before and after Dhu al-Hijjah to protect the interests of merchants traveling to and from Mecca.
When Prophet Muhammad conquered Mecca... He reformed the Hajj to conform to God's will, to the way Muslims worldwide practice it today, even though more than 1,400 years have passed.
After the time of Prophet Muhammad, when transportation was not yet advanced, thousands of Muslims from various countries who wished to perform the Hajj would travel together by animal transport such as camels and donkeys from Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Istanbul—like a moving city. Each group would bring essential daily necessities, as well as flocks of goats and sheep to use their meat and milk for food along the way.
Upon arriving in Mecca, those intending to perform the Hajj would wait for the 8th of Dhul Hijjah by observing the moon in Mecca. No one there could send word to their own countries about the exact date of the Hajj; it was a matter for Muslims within their own countries to observe the moon within their own country to determine the date of Eid.
When Islam spread eastward to India and Indonesia, if Muslims wanted to travel for the Hajj, they had to do so by sailboat and later by motorboat, which took months. Once the ships carrying the pilgrims departed from the port... Those going on Hajj will wait for the announcement of the start date of the Hajj in Mecca, while Muslims in various countries who are waiting to celebrate Eid al-Adha will wait for the announcement of the 10th of Dhul Hij from the authorities responsible for this matter.
This is why God created the sun and the moon for Muslims around the world to count the days and months for performing religious duties according to the natural ways of each locality.
