ทุกศาสนามีความเชื่อร่วมกันในสิ่งเร้นลับอย่างหนึ่ง นั่นคือ สิ่งที่คนไทยเรียกว่าเทวดา ฝรั่งเรียกว่า Angels ส่วนชาวมุสลิมเรียกว่า “มลาอิก๊ะฮฺ”
คำว่ามลาอิก๊ะฮฺถ้าเป็นภาษาไทยให้ตรงก็คือ ทูตสวรรค์ เพราะทูตคือผู้นำสาสน์จากผู้มีอำนาจ ความเชื่อในการมีอยู่ของมลาอิก๊ะฮฺถือเป็นหนึ่งในหลักศรัทธา 6 ประการของอิสลาม
ความเชื่อในเรื่องนี้มีมาเนิ่นนานก่อนที่มนุษย์จะมาอยู่บนโลกใบนี้แล้ว แต่เพราะมนุษย์มองไม่เห็น มนุษย์จึงพยายามวาดภาพหรือไม่ก็ปั้นรูปทูตสวรรค์ขึ้นมาตามจินตนาการของตนขึ้นมา หลักฐานในเรื่องนี้มีให้เห็นได้ตามผนังหรือเพดานวัดและโบสถ์

ตามที่ปรากฏในคัมภีร์กุรอาน อาดัมมนุษย์คนแรกรู้จักมลาอิก๊ะฮฺก่อนจะมายังโลกนี้แล้ว เพราะเมื่อพระเจ้าสร้างอาดัมขึ้นมาทั้งร่างกายและวิญญาณแล้ว พระองค์ได้สั่งให้ทุกสิ่งในอาณาจักรของพระองค์รวมทั้งมลาอิก๊ะฮฺก้มกราบคารวะต่ออาดัม ทุกสิ่งก้มกราบตามคำบัญชาของพระเจ้า ยกเว้นซาตาน การก้มกราบคารวะนี้หมายความว่าถ้าหากอาดัมและลูกหลานของอาดัมปรารถนาสิ่งใด ทุกสิ่งรวมทั้งมลาอิก๊ะฮฺต้องช่วยอาดัมและลูกหลานของเขาให้บรรลุถึงความปรารถนา
นบีมุฮัมมัดได้ให้ความรู้แก่เราว่ามลาอิก๊ะฮฺเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตที่ถูกสร้างมาจากแสงสว่าง มนุษย์จึงมองไม่เห็นมลาอิก๊ะฮฺ แต่มลาอิก๊ะฮฺมองเห็นมนุษย์ มลาอิก๊ะฮฺมีหน้าที่สนองคำบัญชาของพระเจ้าตามที่พระองค์ได้ทรงกำหนด มลาอิก๊ะฮฺไม่กิน ไม่ดื่ม ไม่มีเพศและไม่มีความต้องการทางเพศ นอกจากนี้แล้ว มลาอิก๊ะฮฺยังมีความสามารถในการแปลงร่างเป็นมนุษย์ได้อีกด้วย
