After listening to the story, Heraclius realized that the Prophet Muhammad was the prophet foretold by Jesus Christ. However, he still wanted to confirm his knowledge. Heraclius summoned a Christian man from the Arab tribe named Tajib.

Heraclius told him, "Call me one of you who speaks Arabic fluently and has a good memory." I will send him to Muhammad with my answer to his letter.”

Afterward, a man from the tribe of Tajib brought a Christian Arab from the tribe of Banu Tanuk. Heraclius said, “Take my letter to a man named Muhammad. While you speak with him, look for three things: 1) Does he mention the letter he wrote to me? 2) When he reads my answer, does he mention the night? 3) Check his back for anything noticeable.”

At-Tanukhi, the messenger, traveled from Syria until he reached Tabuk, where he found the Prophet Muhammad sitting with his companions. He approached them and asked, “Where are your companions?” One of the companions replied, “He is there.”

The messenger approached him and sat down in front of him. He then handed him Heraclius’ letter.

The Prophet placed the letter on his lap and asked, “Where are you from?” The man replied, “I am a brother of the tribe of Tanuk.” The Prophet asked, “Will you embrace Islam, the religion of monotheism?” Is it the religion of your ancestor Abraham?" The Prophet wanted this man to convert to Islam, but At-Tanuki said bluntly, "I am a messenger from a person. I will not abandon my religion until I return to my people."

When the Prophet noticed his seriousness, he showed no anger. He simply laughed and said, "You cannot guide those you love. God guides whom He wills, and He knows best who is guided."

Afterward, the Prophet calmly said, "Brothers of Tanuki, I wrote a letter to Caesar, Qisrah, and Negus. I wrote a letter to the one you were sent with, and he followed it. People will continue to find him difficult for a long time as long as he has good things in life." At-Tanuki remembered what Heraclius had told him to observe and said to himself, "This is one of the three things he asked me to remember." Fearing that he might forget, he placed an arrowhead on the side of his sword. The Prophet then gave the letter to someone sitting on his left. At-Tanuki asked, "Who can write and read letters?"

One said, "Muawiyah." Muawiyah began reading and discovered that Heraclius had written to the Prophet: "You summon me to a paradise as vast as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous. Where is Hell?" The Prophet replied, "Subhanallah, where is the night when the morning comes?" At-Tanukiy immediately recognized this as the second thing Heraclius had asked him to observe. He took an arrow and recorded it on the side of his sword.

At-Tanukiy stayed there for a day or two to see if he could see the Prophet's back. Finally, he said, "Well, I'll go back and tell Caesar that I have seen two of the three things you have commanded me to observe." So he went to the Prophet and said, "O Muhammad, I'm going back and will go to Caesar." But the Prophet said, "Wait a minute." He turned away, pulled down his shirt, and said, "Go back and tell your master what you have seen."

At-Tanukiy then returned with the three things he had seen and learned. When At-Tanuki reported what he had found, Caesar knew that Muhammad was the true prophet, but he still did not accept Islam.
