When I was a junior high school student, I heard a friend ask me why some people are born with crippled legs. My friend's uncle replied that it might be due to past karma from a previous life, such as breaking a grasshopper's leg or beating a dog until it broke. This karma from a previous life carries over to this life.
I didn't think much of it, as I was still a child. But then I suddenly wondered: if a person is born with crippled legs in this life because of bad karma from a previous life, and if this crippled person doesn't harm animals and only does good deeds in this life, will he be born with crippled legs in his next life? This question has lingered in my mind ever since.
In high school, my school science class taught that humans evolved from monkeys. This made me even more curious: were humans monkeys in previous lives? If so, were humans born in this life due to good or bad karma from monkeys in previous lives?
Even after entering university, I still couldn't find the answer. Because in university, they taught me in depth that life on Earth originated from cells formed from certain substances that combined in a suitable environment and multiplied, forming living organisms that lived in water. Then, they moved onto land and, over hundreds of millions of years, evolved into apes and eventually humans.
While interested in this topic, while in university, I read in the Quran that God created mankind by first creating Adam from the ground. He then created Eve as his wife. The Bible concurs in this story about the creation of mankind. However, there are similarities and differences. Adam and Eve, the parents of mankind, disobeyed God's command by believing Satan's deception, and were thus sent to this world.
Disobeying God's command is sin, so Christians interpret the sin committed by Adam and Eve as a sin that is borne by all humans, descendants of Adam. God then sent Jesus to redeem all human sins.
Sin is evil that arises from disobeying God's command. This made me wonder, if people sin in the belief that someone will redeem them, does that make them more enticed to sin?
When I turned to studying Islamic teachings from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, I learned that Adam was created from clay, and God breathed his soul into that clay, giving him life. As long as the soul resides in the human body, the human being continues to live. If the soul departs the body, the human body will eventually turn to dust.
The soul is a mystery that humans acknowledge, even though it is invisible. It is something that scientists cannot and will never be able to answer, because God has not given this knowledge to any human being, not even to the Prophet Muhammad. Islamic teachings clarified to me that the soul is a creation of God to enable humans to live, and that the soul knows God well before it resides within the human being.
The Prophet Muhammad further explained that the soul is incarnated by angels when a woman is 120 days pregnant. After that, the human embryo in the mother's womb develops into a human being for nine months before being born into this world.
Islam considers every child born as pure as a white cloth, and the child's fate depends on the parents. However, Islam holds that if a child dies before reaching adulthood (male children begin to experience wet dreams), they are considered innocent. For girls, starting from the time they menstruate, God will not punish the child because he or she is not yet mature enough to distinguish right from wrong. When the child is not punished, he or she will be accepted into heaven.
Those who have reached adulthood, have matured, have wisdom, and have the freedom to choose must therefore take responsibility for their actions.
