ธรรมหมายถึงความดีที่ใครทำแล้วเป็นผลดีต่อตัวเองและสังคม ดังนั้น จึงไม่มีศาสนาใดที่ไม่สอนให้มนุษย์ปฏิบัติธรรม คนที่ปฏิบัติธรรมจะแตกต่างไปจากคนที่ไม่ปฏิบัติธรรมอย่างเห็นได้ชัด
ธรรมบางอย่างเป็นสิ่งจำเป็นต้องปฏิบัติสำหรับบุคคลที่เป็นผู้ปกครอง อย่างเช่น ทศพิธราชธรรมเป็นธรรมประจำตัวของพระราชาที่ต้องปฏิบัติเพื่อผลดีในการปกครองและดีต่อพระราชาเอง
